Reading Genesis One with the Ancient Eye

John Walton

Much of the conflict found in the church regarding what constitutes a “Christian” response to science starts with how we read the opening chapter of the book of Genesis. In this Regent College evening lecture, leading Old Testament scholar John Walton offers an interpretation of Genesis 1 in its cultural context: through the eyes of the inhabitants of the Ancient Near East who were contemporary to its writing. For many, what Walton presents might be an alternative way to read Genesis. However, the “functional” reading offered by Walton makes a profound step towards resolving the apparent conflict between Christianity and science.
